Rahul Gandhi's Roadshow Stalls Traffic, Ambulance Stuck For 40 Minutes

As part of his door-to-door campaign for UP polls, Rahul Gandhi's Kisan Mahayatra reached Ayodhya today.

Faizabad: An ambulance carrying an accident victim was held up for nearly 40 minutes on a road in Uttar Pradesh's Faizabad where Rahul Gandhi had stopped during his roadshow on Friday.

When the Congress vice president's entourage, which had swelled to around 30 cars during various meetings across the district, entered the Pura Bazar area - 20 km outside the city in Faizabad district - the traffic was almost paralysed.

At around 2.30 in the afternoon, Mr Gandhi was addressing a meeting from a parked bus when the ambulance tried to cross the jammed road.

Most of the two-lane road was occupied by vehicles of the Congress and the state administration and traffic was crawling on the narrow lane left for other cars.

The Uttar Pradesh police didn't appear to make any effort to clear the way for the ambulance until the media cameras started rolling.

In the ambulance was a 30-year-old man taking his father, who was injured in a road accident yesterday, to the Faizabad district hospital. "What is the use of all this when they can't even ensure that an ambulance can go through?" he told reporters who happened to be at the spot for the roadshow.

The reporters shouted at local Congress leaders and the Special Protection Group that is in charge of Rahul Gandhi's security to let the ambulance pass urgently.

When the TV cameras started shooting, the politicians and the police scrambled to clear the way for the ambulance.

It took another 15 minutes before the ambulance could move down the road.

A hearse carrying a woman's body was also stuck for a long time on the same road.
