Rahul Gandhi Remembers Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel On His Death Anniversary

Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel worked tirelessly for a "united India" said Congress's Rahul Gandhi.

New Delhi: Congress Vice President Rahul Gandhi on Thursday paid tribute to Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, India's celebrated freedom fighter and revolutionary leader on his 66th death anniversary. Mr Gandhi said that he worked tirelessly for a "united India". On Twitter Mr Gandhi wrote: "Remembering Sardar Patel - a leader who worked tirelessly for an India united in common purpose, transcending narrow divisions of caste and creed."

Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, India's first home minister, was born on October 31, 1875 in Nadiad, a small village in Gujarat. He was popularly known as the 'Iron man' of India. He died on December 15, 1950 after suffering a heart attack in Mumbai.

Mr Patel was conferred with the highest civilian honour, Bharat Ratna, in 1991 for his services to the nation.
