Ragging case: AP college faces de-recognition

New Delhi:

A Hyderabad-based private engineering institute, where a student allegedly committed suicide after being ragged by seniors, is facing de-recognition by All India Council of Technical Education.

AICTE, the regulatory body for engineering education in the country, has sought a report on the incident from the Vasavi College of Engineering June 19.

"The Council will also stop all grants given by it under various schemes. AICTE is in the process of withdrawing approval/withholding the admissions for the current year 2009-10 against the institution for failing to prevent ragging," the HRD Ministry said in New Delhi.

The Council has deputed a fact finding committee to ascertain the facts of the case. Twenty-two-year-old Devender Kumar, who was pursuing MCA, allegedly committed suicide by jumping before a running train in Warangal district.

According to a suicide note recovered from his pocket, he took the extreme step as he was unable to bear the ragging by his seniors at the college.
