Post 26/11: Mumbaiites voting for security
Mumbai:

More than four months after the 26/11 terror attacks, security remains a major concern for the people of Mumbai.

In the highrises, one hears a Mumbaiite say, "We cannot keep getting hit like this. We have to counter them." While in the slums, one gets to hear, "Terrorists attack us from all sides that's why security is a big issue for us this time."

Along with poor infrastructure and growing recession, security has emerged as one of the main issues in Mumbai in Election 2009, two months after the 26/11 attacks. Voter registration shot up too in Mumbai.

Over 50000 new voters registered in south Mumbai alone. This is significant as this is home to the affluent who often do not vote.

A city which has witnessed some of the biggest terror attacks in the country is looking for a candidate who has a clear policy on providing better security.

MUMBAI TERROR ATTACKS

  • March 2003 - Mulund train blast
  • July 2003 - Ghatkopar bus blast
  • August 2003 - Gateway and Zaveri Bazaar blasts
  • July 2006 - Seven train blasts
  • November 2008 - Terrorists attack Mumbai

"They need to tell the people how they will tackle the issue. How they will take it to Parliament and the nitty gritties of dealing with it," says activist Indrani Malkani.

The attacks have inspired a mood for change. One that has led many first time candidates to contest these elections. However, how they will deliver on terror could prove the decisive factor.
