New Delhi: Parents of three toddlers have approached the Supreme Court in the name of their children, protesting that no action is being taken to keep Delhi's air clean and specifically seeking redress against fireworks during Diwali.

Their petition has been filed in the name of Arjun Gopal, Aarav Bhandari and Zoya Rao Bhasin, all aged between 6 and 14 months - which, for the top court, is a first.

"In Delhi, a majority of the pollution is caused by over 500 million tons of crop residue burning that happens in the states around the capital, by polluting trucks that pass through the city at night and road dust and industry," the petition read.

"To add to this, in the months of October and November, the festivals of Dussehra and Diwali lead to massive risks of lung disease -- with firecrackers and fireworks clogging the atmosphere," it further added.

The petition said growing up in a clean environment is a fundamental right, which the state has been unable to protect.

The top court is likely to hear this petition next week.
