New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi telephoned his Pakistani counterpart Nawaz Sharif today to wish him for Eid and a speedy recovery from surgery, a sign the two leaders remain in touch amid fraught diplomatic relations.

Mr Sharif, 66, had successful open heart surgery in a London hospital in May, his second cardiac procedure in five years.

"Indian Prime Minister Modi called Prime Minister Sharif on the occasion of Eid," Mr Sharif's office said in a statement. "He also wished him well for his health post-surgery."

Today was a national holiday in Pakistan, marking the end of the holy month of Ramzan, when Muslims fast from dawn till dusk.

In December, PM Modi made a surprise stopover in Pakistan on his way home from Afghanistan, part of an initiative to speed up attempts to resume talks between Delhi and Islamabad.

Just days later, however, Pakistani terrorists attacked the Indian Air Force base in Pathankot in Punjab; seven military personnel were killed in a lengthy siege. The attack led to the cancellation of talks between Foreign Secretaries. Though Mr Sharif pledged his assistance to India's investigation, and sent over a team of high-level officials to collect and examine evidence, Pakistan has said it does not have enough proof that the gunmen were its citizens.
