Administration to Forward Petition of Couple Claiming to be Geeta's Parents to Foreign Ministry

Geeta was adopted by Pakistan based Edhi Foundation's Bilquis Edhi and lived with her in Karachi before returning to India on October 26.

Indore, Madhya Pradesh: The district administration has said that they will send the application of a couple, claiming to be the parents of Geeta, the hearing and speech impaired girl who returned to India from Pakistan recently, to the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) for further assistance.

"The application of the couple will be sent to the Ministry of External Affairs and after the MEA's decision, a call will be taken on it," district collector P Narhari said.

Geeta, who had landed in Pakistan accidentally as a child and stayed there for over 10 years, is currently staying in an institution for the hearing and speech impaired in Indore.

45-year-old Ramraj Gautam and his wife Anara Devi, hailing from Rama-ka-Purva village of Pratapgarh in Uttar Pradesh, claimed that Geeta was their daughter and her original name was Savita.

The couple carried a photograph claiming that it was that of Geeta's childhood.

"We want to meet Geeta just once. If she refuses to recognise us, we will return home immediately," an emotionally charged Ms Gautam said.

They had expressed their willingness to undergo a DNA test to back their claim of parenthood.

"I am sure that Geeta is my daughter Savita who went missing from my brother-in-law's ashram at Chhapra in Bihar 11 years ago. I and my wife are ready to undergo DNA test to prove our claim," said Mr Gautam.

Stating that his wife's brother was a monk, he said, "I had kept my daughter in his ashram for treatment. She was eight-year-old when she went missing".

Geeta was reportedly only seven or eight years old when she was found sitting alone on the Samjhauta Express at Lahore Station by the Pakistan Rangers 15 years ago.

She was adopted by Edhi Foundation's Bilquis Edhi and lived with her in Karachi before returning to India on October 26.
