On Last Day of Budget Session, Government Rushes to Clear Key Bills Amid Opposition Protests

New Delhi: On the last day of the Budget Session, the Lok Sabha was adjourned for a short while amid protests from the Congress over a food park in Rahul Gandhi's constituency, Amethi, an issue that exercised the Opposition party for much part of Tuesday too.

The Narendra Modi government wants to to push through 11 bills today. A noisy Opposition has already forced two bills crucial to the government's reforms agenda - the Goods and Services Tax Bill and the Land Acquisition Bill - to be sent to parliamentary committees for review.

Today, the Rajya Sabha or Upper House passed the Companies (Amendment) Bill which seeks to change the key provisions of Companies Act to improve the ease of doing business.

Over the last two days, the Rajya Sabha was adjourned multiple times as the Opposition flexed its abundant muscle in the Upper House, demanding the resignation of Urban Development Minister Nitin Gadkari.

In the Lok Sabha, Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi noted that the treasury benches had filled up to hear him rip into the government's land bill, which seeks to make it easier to acquire land for big projects. With several jibes at the Modi government, Mr Gandhi has vowed to take his fight against the land bill, which he calls anti-farmer, to the streets.

When Union minister Harsimrat Kaur Badal made a statement in the Lok Sabha on the Amethi food park, the Congress complained that to one query by Mr Gandhi, the government had responded five times.

Protests erupted in the Lok Sabha as soon as Ms Badal started reading out her detailed rebuttal to Rahul Gandhi's statement last Thursday voicing concerns over the scrapping of the food park. She said the project had failed to secure clearances and had been extended despite that.

Persisting protests forced the Speaker to adjourn the House.
