Highlights

  • Yogi Adityanath took oath as UP Chief Minister yesterday
  • Asks police chief for a plan to tackle crime in state
  • Decision on slaughterhouses 'soon', says deputy Chief Minister KP Maurya
Lucknow: Yogi Adityanath, the new Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh, began his first day at work today by meeting with the state police chief hours after the killing of a politician of Mayawati's BSP. "Be vigilant", he reportedly told police chief Javeed Ahmed while asking for a plan to tackle crime in UP. The 44-year-old priest-politician took oath on Sunday with two deputies - Keshav Prasad Maurya and Dinesh Sharma - and 44 other ministers. Saffron-robed Adityanath, along with his deputies, also met with top officials of the state.

Here are 10 points on Yogi Adityanath taking charge:

  1. Sources say in his meeting with the Uttar Pradesh police chief, Chief Minister Adityanath expressed concern over the killing of a BSP leader in Allahabad last night and ordered a blueprint for better policing in Uttar Pradesh within 15 days.

  2. Deputy Chief Minister KP Maurya indicated that the new government would make good on the BJP's promise to shut down slaughterhouses. He said a decision would be taken "soon", in the first meeting of the cabinet. There appears to be some ambiguity, however, on whether action will also be taken against licensed slaughterhouses.

  3. Two slaughterhouses that shut down last night in Allahabad were running illegally, say officials. Yogi Adityanath has always been vocal about shutting down slaughterhouses but meat traders say such a move would hit revenue as well as livelihoods of thousands.

  4. Yogi Adityanath this morning also met Chief Secretary Rahul Bhatnagar at the VVIP guest house where he camped before moving into his new home. He will also meet Governor Ram Naik.

  5. Yesterday, the Chief Minister held an informal meeting with his cabinet immediately after being sworn in. He has asked all his ministers to submit details of their assets and wealth within 15 days.

  6. Ministers have also been warned against speaking to the media except through Shrikant Sharma and Siddharth Nath Singh, who will be spokespersons for the UP government.

  7. The two seniormost lawmakers of the BJP in Uttar Pradesh will be in charge of training other elected members on how to coordinate with the government. The BJP won 312 seats in the 403-member UP assembly and many of its lawmakers are first-timers.

  8. The Chief Minister and his deputies met top government officials of all departments in an auditorium at the Lok Bhawan. Since his takeover, there has been speculation of a bureaucratic shuffle.

  9. The new Chief Minister moves into his official 5 Kalidas Marg residence in Lucknow today. Seven priests from Gorakhpur performed housewarming rituals before the move.

  10. A five-time member of parliament from Gorakhpur, Yogi Adityanath is the head priest of the Gorakhnath temple in his constituency.
