North-Eastern State Capitals to be Connected With Rail Network by 2020

Srinagar: The Modi government has said that Railways is committed to provide better connectivity in Jammu and Kashmir as well as in Northeastern states, where it aims to connect their capitals with rail network by 2020.

"The Prime Minister has been emphasizing on ensuring all-round development especially in infrastructure sector in Jammu and Kashmir as well as in North-Eastern States. Indian Railways is committed to provide better railway connectivity in North-Eastern States and in the State of Jammu and Kashmir," Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu said.

The minister was addressing the Consultative Committee meeting of Members of Parliament for Ministry of Railways.

Mr Prabhu said that most of the railway projects have been declared national projects in north and north-eastern region and adequate funds have been provided by the government.

He said efforts are on for timely completion of projects to avoid cost over-run and time over-run.

"Efforts are being made to provide connectivity to all capitals of North Eastern states by 2020. Similarly, the work is going on the railway connectivity project between Katra and Banihal," Mr Prabhu said.

Referring to the existing train connectivity in the Kashmir Valley and also in the Jammu-Katra section, Mr Prabhu said Railways have made spectacular achievements and created engineering marvels despite challenging geological conditions, difficult terrain and adverse law and order situation.

"The field units in these regions have also been empowered for faster decision making to expedite execution.

The projects are being constantly monitored both at Zonal level and at Railway Board level. There is also a periodical review at the level of the Railway Minister," he pointed out.

Members of the committee participating in the meeting made several suggestions regarding passenger amenities and on expediting railway projects.

Referring to the recently concluded Railyatri / Upbhokta Pakhwada (Passenger and customer Facilitation fortnight), the Union Minister said the unprecedented and historical nationwide massive public outreach event created a very positive atmosphere between railway administration and the railway users.

"The Senior Railway Functionaries interacted with the public during this fortnight and worked for resolving their problems. Many new projects were commissioned during this period and the entire Railway machinery was galvanised for improving railway facilities and developing infrastructure," he said.

The Members of the Committee participating in the meeting made several suggestions regarding passenger amenities and on expediting railway projects.

They also visited Srinagar Railway Station.

Railway Board Chairman AK Mital, Railway Board Members, Senior Officials from Ministry of Railways and Northern Railway were among those present on the occasion.
