Aligarh: A senior professor of the Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) allegedly died waiting for an ambulance for hours on Tuesday.

Professor D Murthy, 64, was a cancer patient. As his condition deteriorated after a surgery on Sunday, doctors in the campus hospital advised yesterday that he be urgently moved to Delhi.

A doctor has alleged that an ambulance was not arranged in time because of paperwork.

"Facts will emerge when a committee investigates what happened. Whether it was because of doctors or the hospital or the university. It is our duty to find out and we are going to do it," said the university's spokesperson Omar S Peerzada.

Professor Murthy had been on a ventilator since his surgery and every moment was critical, doctors said. He could only be shifted in a specially-equipped ambulance.

"Even after we referred him to Delhi, an ambulance was not available for hours," said Mohammad Aslam, the chairman of the Surgery department of the Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College in the university.

Professor Murthy headed the university's Department of Modern Indian Languages.

The university's teachers have alleged negligence.

Last month, five doctors of the hospital were charged after a student died of dengue while being treated at the hospital. After being accused of medical negligence, the university authorities acted swiftly to set up an inquiry this time.
