Patna: Nitish Kumar today refused to contribute to the controversy over Prime Minister Narendra Modi's college degrees, dismissing it as a "non-issue".

"For me these are non-issues," the Bihar Chief Minister said in a surprising response to a question on the massive row confronting his chief political adversary.

Mr Kumar spoke after BJP president Amit Shah and Union Minister Arun Jaitley released copies of PM Modi's degrees to the media and demanded Arvind Kejriwal's apology for accusing the prime minister of lying about his education.

Mr Kumar did not back Mr Kejriwal but said that the BJP should first "express regret for uttering filth" during the Bihar election

Bitter sparring between Mr Kumar and PM Modi marked the campaign for Bihar last year. The acrimony between the two politicians peaked after the prime minister commented at an election rally that deceit and treachery are in the chief minister's DNA.

Mr Kejriwal and his Aam Aadmi Party have alleged that the degrees released by the BJP are "fake" and the prime minister made false claims in his 2014 poll documents about a Bachelor's from Delhi University and Master's from Gujarat University.
