Nepal Earthquake: Tremors Halt Metro Services in Delhi, Kolkata

Delhi Metro services were halted after tremors were felt in the National Capital Region and across India.

New Delhi: Delhi's Metro service was halted at 12.38 pm today, soon after a big earthquake measuring 7.4 on the Richter scale hit Nepal today, with tremors were felt across much of North and East India, including the capital.

The service resumed at restricted speed at 12.45, said the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation or DMRC.

In Kolkata, metro services were stopped from 12.38 pm to 1.30 pm. Service resumed after a thorough check of lines.

In many cities like Patna in Bihar and Gurgaon near the Capital, people rushed out of homes and offices as the quake hit.

Schools in Delhi evacuated students as the tremor struck. Some schools sent text messages to parents assuring them that children were safe.   

In West Bengal's  Jalpaiguri, schools were closed after quake.

A second earthquake of 6.9 magnitude struck Nepal a little after 1 pm.   

More than 8,000 people were killed and about were 17,000 injured in Nepal in a massive earthquake on April 25. 50 people had died in Bihar.
