Chandigarh: Cricketer-turned-politician Navjot Singh Sidhu will quit his popular guest spot in comedian Kapil Sharma's show in September, say sources, before he turns his focus to Punjab for elections in the state next year.

Mr Sidhu, who announced a new group Awaaz-e-Punjab earlier this month, is expected to arrive in Amritsar on October 1 to a grand welcome. This will be his first visit to the city after the launch.

Sources close to Mr Sidhu say he will wind up his contract with the "Kapil Sharma Show" by the end of this month and devote himself to politics full time.

The politician's wife Navjot Kaur told reporters: "Sidhu had made it clear that Punjab is above all his business commitments and he will live up to his promise."

Others in Awaaz-e-Punjab have started reaching out to politicians and parties for alliances, pitching the group as a fourth alternative before the assembly polls.

Independent lawmakers Balwinder Singh Bains and Simarjit Singh Bains, and Pargat Singh, who quit the ruling Akali Dal, have held a series of meetings with Suchha Singh Chhotepur, who was sacked as AAP's Punjab president.

Mr Sidhu, 52, resigned as a parliamentarian of the BJP recently after going public with his resentment against his party of 12 years. His frustration peaked when the party fielded Arun Jaitley from Amritsar, the constituency from where he had won twice.

Amid swirling speculation he confirmed that his talks with the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) did not work out. Arvind Kejriwal, he alleged, "wants only yes men."
