New Delhi:

Opposition parties in Uttar Pradesh have slammed Mayawati for unveiling statues and parks of Dalit leaders ahead of schedule, saying it was aimed at pre-empting the Supreme Court from putting these projects on hold.

Blasting the Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister, Samajwadi Party leader Mulayam Singh Yadav said on Friday that he would bulldoze the statues if he could.

The Congress also attacked Mayawati for unveiling memorials and parks to commemorate Dalit icons describing it as "waste of public money".

Senior Congress leader Digvijay Singh demanded an inquiry into the whole episode and the manner in which the UP Chief Minister hurriedly inaugurated over 15 memorials in Lucknow on Thursday, nine days ahead of schedule.

"Money of people is being wasted. It is absolute misuse of public money and public trust. People will not forgive her. She has seen the result in Lok Sabha elections earlier. BSP will be finished in 2012 assembly elections," Singh told reporters in New Delhi on Friday.

Alleging corruption, he said, probe should be conducted to find out from where stones were procured, from which mine, and who owned the mine.

"My own information is that there is huge corruption," he said, adding that Mayawati acted in a hurry to escape a PIL filed against these constructions.

"The hurried manner in which these inaugurations were done yesterday was because of the PIL, which is to come up before the Supreme Court on July 3," he added.

Mayawati had unveiled the 15 statues, which included that of BSP founder late Kanshi Ram and her own, and parks at a hurriedly-organised function on Thursday, nine days ahead of schedule.
