Mobile phone recovered from Nalini's prison cell

Mobile phone recovered from Nalini's prison cell
Chennai: Seizing mobile phones inside prisons in India is not news. But when it involves an inmate as high profile as Nalini Sriharan, there are bound to be repercussions!

The phone, concealed in a cloth bag, was caught during a routine raid at the Vellore Jail where Nalini is currently serving her life term for the assassination of former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi.

The seizure comes at a time when the Nalini is exploring every possible legal avenue to get out of prison.

Her lawyer, Pugalendi, says the mobile phone was planted by the Prison authorities to dent her chances of premature release.

"Nalini had complained about harassment by prison staff earlier this month. So they are trying to frame her," the lawyer said.

Denying the conspiracy charge, the prison authorities say the incident is a blot on Nalini's repeated claims of good conduct throughout her 19-year prison stint. As a life convict she is allowed to meet only her family and lawyers.

A case has been registered at the local police station and the prison officials are investigating how a phone was sneaked into her cell.
