Meteorological Department Retains 88 Per Cent Deficient Monsoon Forecast

New Delhi: Retaining its deficient monsoon forecast of 88 per cent of the long period average for the year, the Meteorological Office on Monday said rainfall over the country between August and September is likely to be 84 per cent.

According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the season (June to September) rainfall over the country as a whole is likely to be 88 per cent of LPA as was predicted in June while rainfall between August and September is "likely to be below normal" at 84 per cent of the of long period average (LPA).

Meanwhile, El Nino which means warming of sea-surface temperatures which can prompt dry spells, is likely to strengthen over the next few months, the IMD said.

"From April to July 2015, El Nino conditions have strengthened. Latest forecast indicates probability of El Nino conditions to become strong during remaining part of the monsoon season," it said.
