Maoists, police exchange fire in Orissa

Bhubaneswar: Orissa police have seized a laptop and arms after a fierce exchange of fire with the Maoists in a dense forest at the border of Keonjhar and Jajpur districts on Monday, official sources said.

Acting on intelligence inputs, a team of elite anti-Naxal Special Operation Group (SOG) and police raided a hideout of the ultras in Rebana forest on Monday following which the encounter began.

Some ultras could have been killed but a clear picture would be available only after the encounter is over, they said, adding additional forces were also being sent to the site as the exchange of fire is still on.

Security personnel had undertaken a combing operation in the area last week.

Unofficial sources said the Maoists suffered casualties, but police refuse to make any claims.
