Man Dies in Custody in Delhi, Suicide, Say Police

The man had died in custody shortly after arrest.

New Delhi: A man died in police custody shortly after his arrest in Delhi today. The police claimed he had consumed some poisonous substance even before they arrested him. By the time they could get him to a hospital, he had died.

Bhupinder Kumar, 30, had been accused of abduction by the father of a married woman friend. On December 28, he had allegedly spirited her off to Mauritius. The woman's father had registered a complaint with the police on January 7.

Today, the police got a tip-off that the two were in Delhi. They were apparently on way to Kathmandu and the plane had made a stopover in Delhi.
The police say Kumar had consumed poison even before they had reached the Terminal 3 of the Indira Gandhi International airport, where the two were.

An officer said they took him to a police station in Kirti Nagar, West Delhi, and then realised something was wrong. He was taken to a local hospital, but by then it was too late.

According to the officer, Kumar's woman friend said he kept poison on his person at all times and threatened to commit suicide if his wishes were not followed. In fact, that was how he had forced her to accompany him to Mauritius, she reportedly said.

Kumar, who was also married, used to run a shop selling ball-bearings at Ajmeri Gate.

A magisterial inquiry will be held into the death.
