Leh Coldest Place in Jammu and Kashmir

Srinagar: Leh in frontier region of Ladakh was the coldest place in Jammu and Kashmir on Monday when the night temperature at most places, including the summer capital of Srinagar, dropped by 1-4 degrees.

The minimum temperature recorded at Leh, 434 kilometres from Srinagar, was minus 9.2 degrees Celsius as against previous night's minus 7.2 degrees Celsius, an official at the  Meteorological Department said.

The night temperature in Kargil, in Ladakh region, also recorded a dip of nearly 2 degrees to settle at minus 6.2 degrees Celsius.

Pahalgam, the famous hill resort in south Kashmir which serves as a base camp during the annual Amarnath yatra, recorded a drop of nearly 4 degrees in the minimum temperature which settled at minus 4.4 degrees Celsius as against yesterday's minus 0.8 degrees Celsius.

The famous ski resort of Gulmarg in north Kashmir was the coldest place in the Valley with a low of minus 5.4 degrees Celsius, down from the previous night's minus 4.7 degrees Celsius, the official said.

Srinagar recorded a further drop of 1 degree in the night temperature which settled at minus 2.4 degrees Celsius as against yesterday's minus 1.2 degrees Celsius.

The minimum temperature recorded in north Kashmir's Kupwara town was minus 3.4 degrees Celsius as against yesterday's minus 2.4, while Kokernag in south Kashmir recorded a minimum of minus 1.9 degrees Celsius as against minus 0.8 the previous night.

The Meteorological Department predicted light rain or snow at isolated places in the state during the next 24 hours and further fall in night temperature during the next four days.
