Koda rushed to hospital amid corruption raids

Ranchi:

Former Jharkhand Chief Minister Madhu Koda has been admitted to ICU of Apollo, Ranchi,after he complained of stomach pain on Tuesday.


He faces face legal action in connection with hawalatransactions and illegal investments amounting to Rs 2,000 crore. Income Tax officials say Koda is still being questioned and searches are continuing.

The Income Tax Department had earlier issued an ultimatum to his aides toappear before it.

The deadline for Koda's close aides to appear before the income tax department has ended today.

A top Income Tax official has said the former CM was not co-operating with the probe.

"Madhu Koda is not co-operating with us in our investigation. We have issued notices to six people, including Binod Sinha and Sanjay Chowdhary, to appear before us by Nov 6, else we will take legal action," said Ashwini Kumar, DG, Income Tax.

Meanwhile, income tax officials say more and more wealth is being discovered.

The I-T department officials claim to have unearthed documents that suggested he had allegedly sent Rs 560 crore abroad through hawala.

They haven't, however, commented on whether they've approached the Interpol for help yet.

I-T sources claimed Koda had allegedly amassed over Rs 2,000 crore along with his associates through illegal means in the country and abroad.

The department has raided 70 properties of Koda and his associates in Delhi, Kolkata, Mumbai, Lucknow, Nasik, Ranchi, Chaibasa and Jamshedpur following allegations that he had amassed illegal wealth during his tenure as chief minister and minister for mines in the Arjun Munda government.

Koda's alleged empire:

  • Hotels and three companies in Mumbai
  • A Property in Kolkata
  • A Hotel in Thailand
  • A coalmine in Liberia on the west coast of Africa
  • Illegal foreign-exchange transactions worth Rs 55 crore
  • Alleged assets worth Rs 4,000 crore
