New Delhi: Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi today voiced pain at the brutal rape and murder of a law student in Kerala and said the Congress-led government would take "swift action" to bring the guilty to book.

Mr Gandhi took to twitter to say: "Deeply saddened and pained to learn of the brutal rape and murder of a law student in Perumbavoor, Kerala."

He said he has spoken about the incident to Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee chief VM Sudheeran.

"Spoke to PCC President Sudheeranji about the incident, Kerala government will take swift action to bring the guilty to book," Mr Gandhi added. Kerala is ruled by a Congress-led coalition.

Earlier, Bharatiya Janata Party lawmaker Meenakshi Lekhi demanded to know why Congress president Sonia Gandhi and vice president Rahul Gandhi had not spoken on the incident that has, due to its brutality, drawn parallels with Delhi's Nirbhaya incident.

Targeting Mr Gandhi, Ms Lekhi said: "These people who politicise suicides have no time to visit the state."

"The Congress president herself is a woman but their concern for women and Dalits comes up only if the incident happens in a non-Congress state."

A 30-year-old law student from a poor family was brutally murdered, after being allegedly raped, in Ernakulam in Kerala five days ago.
