Journalist's arrest: National Human Rights Commission issues notice to UP chief secretary

New Delhi: The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) today issued notices to Uttar Pradesh Chief Secretary and Director General of Police (DGP) regarding the arrest of a senior journalist who reported about the death of deputy Chief Medical Officer (CMO) Y S Sachan.

Issuing notices, the NHRC asked the Chief Secretary and DGP to submit detailed reports in the matter within a week.

A spokesperson said the Commission received two complaints regarding the arrest of bureau chief of a Hindi TV channel after he reported about Sachan's death saying that the injuries could not be self-inflicted.
    
"The Commission received two complaints in the matter, one from Lenin Raghuvanshi, Secretary General, PVCHR/JMN, Varanasi and another from Mr R.H. Bansal, Chief Editor, Human Rights Observer yesterday.

"The Commission observed that the allegations framed by the complainants, if true, raise serious issues of violation of human rights of the victim and issued notices to the Chief Secretary and Director General of Police, Government of Uttar Pradesh calling for their detailed reports in the matter within a week," he said.

Earlier, the Commission, on the death of Sachan in judicial custody, had issued notices to the Chief Secretary and Senior Superintendent of Police, Lucknow calling for their reports in the matter.

It had also directed the District Magistrate and Superintendent of Jail, Lucknow to explain as to why the intimation about the death in custody was not reported within 24 hours to the NHRC, as per its guidelines.
