Suresh Kalmadi, former chairman of the Commonwealth Games Organising Committee (OC) who has been lodged in a jail on charges of corruption, will soon undergo a brain scan as a Delhi court gave its permission on Saturday.
The special Central Bureau of Investigation court gave its direction after it received a report from the medical officer of the Tihar Jail's number four sub-jail advising MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) of Kalmadi's brain.
Kalmadi on Thursday had filed an application before the court stating that he should be medically examined as he was not feeling well. The court accepted his plea and asked the medical officer to submit a report.
Special CBI Judge Talwant Singh directed the Tihar Jail superintendent to take Kalmadi to the Lok Nayak Jayaprakash Narayan (LNJP) Hospital for the MRI of his brain.
"The jail superintendent and the medical superintendent of LNJP Hospital are directed to ensure that the MRI is done and the report is submitted by July 21," the court said.
The court said if the MRI facility was not available in the LNJP Hospital, Kalmadi should be taken to the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS).
"In case the accused is taken to the AIIMS, the medical superintendent is directed to ensure that the report is filed before the court at the earliest," the court said.
The counsel for Kalmadi asked the court to send him to LNJP Hospital as the Deen Dayal Upadhyay Hospital, close to the prison, did not have the MRI facility.
He told the court that his client was waiting for the test for over a week and did not want to delay it as it might prove fatal for him.
"If the test is at my cost, then I be allowed to go to a private hospital, and if it is to be done at government hospital, then it is pleaded that the test be done at the earliest," Kalmadi's counsel said.
The court accepted the affidavits of co-accused and two promoters of Faridabad-based Gem International - Anil Madan and P.D. Arya - and posted the matter for July 21.
The duo on Thursday submitted an undertaking before the court that they will surrender within 7-10 days if the high court rejected their anticipatory bail. The court had asked them to file the affidavits.
The CBI on May 20 filed its first charge sheet in the case against Kalmadi and 10 others, describing the former OC chief as prime accused and the mastermind in a corruption case related to financial irregularities in awarding a Rs.141 crore contract for timing, scoring and result system for the October 2010 sporting event.
