Its make or break in Bengal for Trinamool, Left

Kolkata:

Call it fate or geography, Buddhadeb is a voter in Mamata's Kolkata south seat. As is Brinda Karat, Pranab Mukherjee and Somnath Chatterjee as well. As the heavyweights voters voted, the heavyweight candidate Mamata slammed Buddhadeb.

"I want to tell him that he is a rigging chief minister," she said.

No wonder Mamata was agitated. The stakes in this third phase of polls were very high.

In 2004, of 11 seats that voted on Wednesday, the Left had won 10. For the Left, it was imperative to pull off a repeat of last time. For Mamata, the last opportunity to dent the red fort.

Retaliating to the rigging charge, the Left accused the Trinamool of unleashing hit squads.

Says Biman Bose, chairman of Left front: "It can be taken for granted that the Trinamool workers will resort to violence." Wednesday's performance will decide which party -- the Trinamool or the Left -- will be the kingmaker in the capital.
