Illicit liquor kills seven in Ahmedabad

Ahmedabad:

There have been protests in Ahmedabad after eight people died and at least 24 people fell ill after they consumed spurious liquor at the Laxmipura chawl in the old part of the city.

In the protests on Tuesday, six people were injured when the police fired teargas shells and lathicharged the protesters.

The incident sparked off protests in the area with women taking to the streets, demanding government and police to crack down on illegal liquor dens in the state.

Police did a mild lathicharge to control the agitators. "However, the situation is under control," Deputy Commissioner of Police Sachin Badshah said.

Earlier in the morning, some people started vomiting and complained of stomach ache after consuming spurious liquor. They were rushed to V S Hospital in Ahmedabad where seven of them died and five are stated to be in critical condition, police said.

Gujarat Assembly's Leader of Opposition Shaktishin Gohil visited the area and the hospital to take stock of the situation.

"Women in the area said they have told police many times to take action against illegal liquor dens there, but no action was taken," he told reporters. (With PTI inputs)
