'I am Here on Behalf of Rahul,' Says Congress President Sonia Gandhi in Amethi

Congress Party Chief Sonia Gandhi met rain affected farmers in her constituency Raebareli, Uttar Pradesh.

Amethi, Uttar Pradesh:

Congress President Sonia Gandhi, who was visiting Raebareli and Amethi today, said that her son and party Vice President Rahul Gandhi will be back soon.

"When Rahul will come back, and he will be back soon, then he will also come," said Mrs Gandhi in response to a question that people of Amethi expected Rahul Gandhi to visit them.

Mrs Gandhi was on a one day stock taking visit to her constituency Raebareli in Uttar Pradesh. With her son still on leave of absence, she also extended her visit to his constituency - Amethi.

"I am here and I am here on behalf of Rahul and Priyanka. We are family. It doesn't matter if it's Amethi or Raebareli, both are our constituencies. I used to work here, so it feels like home. It doesn't make a difference whether it is mine or Rahul's," said Mrs Gandhi.

Mrs Gandhi's visit comes days after BJP put up posters across Uttar Pradesh - including Amethi - declaring the 44-year-old Vice President as "Missing Person." Mr Gandhi has been on leave of absence since February 16.

Mrs Gandhi passed through several villages of the district stopping briefly to interact with locals and taking stock of the losses to the crops due to this year's unseasonal rains and hailstorms. "The damage is very extensive," said Mrs Gandhi.

"It is true that Rahul Bahiaya hasn't come. He should have, but its ok. We are still with him," said Brijnath, a farmer from district.

She also visited the house of Kathak exponent Sheetla Prasad who had lost his life in the recent train derailment incident.

Her visit to the state comes amid increased focus of the party on farmers' issues and its strident opposition to the NDA government's controversial land ordinance. She had earlier met rain affected farmers in Haryana and Rajasthan.

Yesterday, Mrs Gandhi, in a strongly-worded letter to the government said that "fighting for the rights of farmers is "non-negotiable" for her party.

Earlier this month, the 68-year-old Congress President was seen leading nearly 100 lawmakers from 14 parties in a march from parliament to the Rashtrapati Bhawan to signal their protest to the government's Land Bill.
