How Rescue Team Helped A Woman Deliver Twins In Boat In Flood-Hit Bihar

The mother and twins were examined by the doctors at the health centre and later allowed to go home.

Patna: A woman gave birth to twins in a boat in flood-hit Bihar's Raghopur on Sunday.

The family of Rekha Devi, 25, had sent a message to the National Disaster Response Force or NDRF, asking that she be shifted immediately to the nearest Primary Health Centre at Mohanpur. But the woman, who had already gone into labour, gave birth to the twins on board.

The mother and the twins were examined by the doctors at the health centre and later allowed to go home.

This was the third delivery in the last one week and second in Vaishali District. The little boy, born in Vaishali last week, was named Namami Gange. Earlier, a girl was born in Patna district.

The NDRF has a specialised team which is not only trained in disaster relief but equipped with all the necessary equipment to help in similar emergencies.

With three more deaths reported from Samastipur today, the number of deaths in Bihar rose to 156 as there was no let up in the flood situation.In neighbouring Uttar Pradesh, the Ganga continues to flow above the danger level in four districts although there has been no fresh rainfall lately.

Chief Minister Nitish Kumar inspected relief camps in Bhagalpur on Sunday. He later reached Purnea, where he held a meeting with top officials. He will visit Katihar on Monday.

5.56 lakh people have been rescued so far from the 12 flood-affected districts of Bihar. The government is plying 2,821 boats for evacuation.

With no fresh rainfall, the Ganga and Yamuna rivers have been receding in Uttar Pradesh. Around 8.7 lakh people in 987 villages of the state remain affected due to floods. The state government has alerted the health department for outbreak of any disease.

The flood situation in West Bengal's Malda district remained unchanged with the Ganga water level standing static at 48 cm above the extreme danger level.

Additional District Magistrate Kanchan Chowdhury said over 5,550 families in 45 villages are affected.

NDRF has teams which are equipped with equipment to help in emergencies such as child delivery
