Lucknow:
As Muzaffarnagar in Western Uttar Pradesh tries to recover from the violence that killed nearly 50 people and placed 40,000 in refugee camps, the state government has been asked to provide details of all communal riots that have erupted since Akhilesh Yadav took over as chief minister in March 2012.
Mr Yadav's government has been given two weeks to furnish the information to the Allahabad High Court based on a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) filed by social activist Nutan Thakur.
The PIL alleges that the government's policies and actions have favoured the minority Muslim voters in Uttar Pradesh.
Mr Yadav has been accused of ignoring clear signs of rising Hindu-Muslim tension in Muzaffarnagar, 125 km north east of Delhi. After riots erupted on September 7, the army was called into Uttar Pradesh for the first time in over a decade. Soldiers were withdrawn today.
Mr Yadav toured the area on Sunday and was confronted with angry residents chanting slogans against him.
Like the Prime Minister, who visited Muzaffarnagar yesterday, the chief minister has avowed "the toughest punishment" for those found guilty of instigating the violence.
