High-Alert at Kochi Airport After Letter Warns of Terror Strike

Security was tightened around Kochi airport

Kochi: The airport at Kochi in Kerala is on high-alert after an anonymous letter warned of a possible terror attack. Officials said they believe the letter is a hoax, but more detailed security checks are being conducted as a precaution.

Kochi Airport Director A K C Nair told the Press Trust of India that information was received of a threat to the Air India flight on the Mumbai-Kochi sector on October 25 and Ahmedabad-Mumbai sector tonight.

"There was a threat of bomb attack or bomb suicide attack," he said.

The Director of Airports Authority of India, Kolkata, had received an anonymous letter last night stating that Air India flights on the Ahmedabad-Mumbai and Mumbai-Kochi sector will be 'sabotaged', airport sources said.

A bomb disposal squad is on stand-by at the airport, along with Anti-Hijacking Unit.

The source of the letter has not been tracked yet and details are being investigated, but security has been stepped up, not just at Kochi, but also at Ahmedabad, where sources said that the festival season calls for more stringent safety checks every year.
