Govt proposes to dilute Nuclear Liability Bill

New Delhi: It seems the government has learnt no lessons after Bhopal.

As the government looks at possible changes to the Nuclear Liability Bill after the outcry over the Bhopal gas verdict, NDTV has learnt that a key clause which held foreign suppliers accountable for willful negligence, and which was opposed by the Americans, has been knocked off in Tuesday's meeting of the Standing Committee.

Sources have told NDTV that at Tuesday's Standing Committee meeting, the Department of Atomic Energy proposed that clause 17 b be deleted.

This clause says, "Foreign suppliers can be sued for damages by the operator if the nuclear accident has resulted from the willful act or gross negligence on the part of the supplier."

Now, the operator can only sue the supplier if they have a contract that spells out damages under certain circumstances.
