FIR is every citizen's right: PM

FIR is every citizen's right: PM
New Delhi: In the wake of recent outrage over Ruchika molestation case, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh said on Tuesday that it is the right of every citizen to have his complaint registered as First Information Report (FIR) with the police.

"Recently, concerns have been expressed that very often if people go to register a FIR, there are obstacles that they have to experience, problems arising out of the existence of vested interests.

"I think these are type of concerns which must be addressed.  It is the right of every citizen who has a genuine complaint to have an FIR registered," Singh said addressing the IPS probationers at his residence in New Delhi.

The Prime Minister's comments assume significance in the wake of allegations from the family of Ruchika Girhotra that when they went to lodge a complaint against former Haryana DGP S P S Rathore in the molestation case, police initially refused the register an FIR.

Her brother had also faced similar problems when false cases were slapped on him.
