Father from Chennai who lost daughter in Liverpool

Father of Georgina Thomsson in Liverpool

Liverpool/Chennai: 18-year-old Georgina Thomsson had come to the UK from Chennai last year to become an astronaut like her childhood idol Kalpana Chawla.

Studying Aerospace Engineering at Liverpool University, space was an obsession for the brilliant student, but the dream was cut short on July 12. Gerogina was found dead in a room in her university campus in Edge Hill, Liverpool. She allegedly hanged herself.

Her father, police inspector S Thomsson, who rushed to Liverpool from Chennai, says he was not allowed to see his daughter's body for a couple of days after reaching there and suspects foul play.

"There is no fan, no iron rod in the room where she was found dead. Only two wardrobes are there. She is no more than my height. There is no chance for her to hang herself," said Mr Thomsson after inspecting the room where she allegedly hanged herself.

Mr Thomsson's Surrey-based friend, Leo Bashyam, said, "We are not getting the full cooperation from the police or the coroner... It took about five days for the body to be seen, and till now they've not given the letters which Georgina wrote before she died."

The police, however, have told NDTV that the death is not believed to be suspicious.

Replying to NDTV's queries, Liverpool University said, "We are saddened to announce the death of one of our students at a University residence. We are supporting Merseyside Police with their enquiries. Our thoughts are with the student's friends and family at this difficult time."

Georgina was not in regular touch with her family. She had just exchanged two-three emails with them in the last six months. In the last email sent to her father in April, she said she was unwell.

Mr Thomsson has now decided to approach the Indian High Commission for help with paying for repatriation of the body due to financial constraints. The inspector had mortgaged his house to pay for Georgina's education.

He says he won't go to collect his daughter's luggage until the mystery surrounding her death is resolved.
