Akola:

A 24-year-old farmer attempted suicide by consuming poison at the state-run electricity company's office in Akola on Tuesday.

A suicide note has been recovered and Vinod Harode has been admitted to a government hospital in the city. Doctors say his condition remains critical.

Despite repeated requests, Harode was denied power connection for his farm. The power company officials had demanded a bribe of Rs 20,000, his father Ramdas told reporters. He said the family had paid charges for installation of an electric pole.

"We made an application for an electricity connection, for which we had paid for 12 months," his father told NDTV.

"But despite the payments and numerous rounds of their offices, they have not sanctioned our connection. So today, we went to electric station to meet the officer after which my son poisoned himself."

Over 600 farmers have committed suicide in Maharashtra this year. In the last two decades, more than 35,000 farmers have committed suicide in Vidarbha.
