Donate to Party Coffers, Congress Asks All Former and Present Lawmakers

Congress has also decided to ask their workers to contribute Rs 250 annually to the party coffers.

New Delhi: To augment its finances after the crushing defeat in last year's general elections, the Congress has asked all its present and former lawmakers to donate money for the party, said sources.

Veteran leader and party treasurer, Motilal Vora has written letters to all 44 lawmakers in Lok Sabha and 65 lawmakers in Rajya Sabha, asking them to donate their one month salary.

Sources say that the Delhi state unit had a meeting yesterday, in which former lawmakers were asked to deposit Rs one lakh each for party fund by the first week of October. Senior leader, PC Chacko and Delhi Congress chief, Ajay Maken will meet former lawmakers of the state and parliament individually tomorrow to discuss the issue, after receiving Mr Vora's letter.

The state leadership has also been asked to rope in the former state ministers to mop up resources, while former Union Ministers, who served in either or both UPA or UPA II governments, will be asked to liberally help the party in the hour of need, said sources.

According to sources, there is no upper limit, but the party would be seeking donations upwards of Rs one lakh.

"Earlier also MPs, MLAs and MLCs from the party used to donate their one month salary in party fund... Hence its time that ex-MPs, ex-MLAs, ex-MLCs, senior office bearers of the party, councillors and others, who are capable, should pitch in," said a former party MP said on the condition of anonymity.

Indications about the fund scarcity had been given to party leaders over three months back. A number of states have already deposited the money. Congress had also decided to ask its workers to contribute Rs 250 annually to the party coffers to make the organisation self-sufficient, said sources.
