Kolkata: CPI(M) general secretary Sitaram Yechury today expressed dissatisfaction over the functioning of Election Commission in the ongoing West Bengal Assembly polls, saying democracy will be in danger if it did not function in a free and fair way.

State Left Front chairman Biman Bose demanded that the West Bengal CEO be removed if he is unable to perform his duties.

"There will be danger for democracy if the Election Commission does not function in a free and fair way. The officials of CEO office are saying that if there is peace inside the booth then elections are peaceful. What about violence and intimidation of voters in the election area?

Everything related to election is the responsibility of the Election Commission," Mr Yechury told a media conference in Kolkata.

"We are not satisfied with the performance of Election Commission. The elections should be held in a free and fair manner," the CPI(M) general secretary said.

Turning to the CPI(M)-Congress alliance in Bengal, he said it was the demand of the people of Bengal that opposition should put up a united fight against Trinamool Congress.

"We are confident that there will be an alternate government after the polls," Mr Yechury said.

Stepping up the ante against West Bengal Chief Electoral officer Sunil Gupta, Mr Bose said he should be removed from office if he is unable to perform his duty properly.

"If he (CEO) is sick then he should consult the doctor," Mr Bose said.
