Mumbai: Delhi University professor GN Saibaba, arrested a year ago by the Maharashtra police for alleged links with Maoists, has been granted temporary bail of three months.

The wheelchair-bound English professor was arrested in Delhi in May, 2014, today by a team from Maharashtra's Maoist-affected Gadchiroli district.

The police had accused him of links with absconding members of the banned CPI-Maoist, including their top leader Ganpathy. The police alleged that Professor Saibaba was an overground worker for the CPI-Maoist, a charge that he denied.

Mr Saibaba was arrested on the basis of evidence from his computer, seized in raids. Policy documents and strategy papers linked to CPI Maoists were recovered from him, say the police.

The professor's name came up after the arrest of two alleged Maoist sympathisers, who had reportedly claimed that Mr Saibaba was their main contact. One of the Maoist leaders, Hem Mishra, who was arrested with a microchip, allegedly said he was carrying instructions to Maoist leaders at Gadchiroli.
