Delhi Airport Officer Arrested Yesterday on Sexual Harassment Charges is Out on Bail

New Delhi:

Vinod Kumar, an immigration officer who was arrested yesterday on charges of sexually harassing a Bengaluru woman at New Delhi's Indira Gandhi International Airport last month, was released on bail today.

The officer - who asked the woman questions like whether she slept and "partied" with other men when her husband wasn't around -- has been suspended since the woman filed a complaint with the Delhi police on March 28.

The 37-year-old woman was traveling to Hong Kong on March 18, when Vinod Kumar allegedly asked her these and other offensive questions. "He chased me on the travellator and asked, do you drink, smoke, do you eat chicken, do you have fun with other men. Did you have surgery to avoid another child? I was really shocked and didn't know what to say. He asked are you going to meet your husband or another man? When I took out my phone and started talking to a friend, he instantly left," the woman told NDTV last month.

Upon her return from Hong Kong, she and her husband complained to a senior officer at the Delhi airport, but all they received was an apology, while the officer continued to work in his position. The woman's father-in-law then pushed to have a complaint accepted by the government's Bureau of Immigration. After that, the officer was suspended and the home ministry ordered an inquiry.
