Cyclonic Storm in Meghalaya; Seven People Injured

Shillong: Seven persons including a two year-old infant were injured and over 40 houses were flattened when a cyclonic storm accompanied with heavy rain lashed Sohpdok, Mawhati and Nonglum villages in Meghalaya's Ri-Bhoi district on Thursday, official said.

Magret Kurbah and her two daughters - Plilynti Kurbah (16) and Idaphisabet Kurbah (2) of Sohdpok village received injuries when their house collapsed under the impact of the storm that lashed the area in the afternoon hours.

The trio was later rushed to Umsning Community Health Centres (CHC), district Deputy Commissioner Poojay Pandey told PTI. A senior official of the district was also sent to the affected villages to assess the losses incurred and to oversee relief action, she said, adding that a report is awaited from the Block Development officer.
       
In Nonglum village, two persons who received serious injuries were identified as 90 year-old Jhat Wahlang and 24-year old Barishisha Wahlang. Both have been admitted in Bhoirymnong Community Health Centre for treatment, the DC said.
       
Three villagers suffered injuries at Sohpdok village. A government LP School, a veterinary building, a ginger processing unit and Community hall buildings also bore the brunt of the storm, Sohpdok village headman Rocky Nongkhlaw said.
