Cyclone Phailin: Kaviti, one of the worst hit in Andhra Pradesh

Cyclone Phailin: Kaviti, one of the worst hit in Andhra Pradesh

Saralamma's house collapsed due to the strong winds

Kaviti, Srikakulam: A day after Cyclone Phailin hit the coast of Andhra Pradesh, NDTV travelled to Kaviti, one of the worst affected regions in the state's Srikakulam district.

Just at the road that leads to Kaviti, the first batch pass outs of Andhra State Disaster and Fire Force were seen using all their strength and training to clear the road blocks for movement of vehicles. Four NDRF teams have also been deployed in Kaviti after the cyclone.

Like in other parts of Srikakulam, even after 24 hours, villagers in Kaviti are awaiting the restoration of power supply, which was earlier shut down to avoid any causalities.

Though Andhra Pradesh suffered one cyclone related death, the destruction has been immense. For Saralamma, a widow and mother of two, life has almost come to a standstill with her house collapsing due to the strong winds.

For farmers in Kaviti, their coconut plantations are the prized possessions, passed on from generations, but Srinivas, like many others, has lost 200-300 trees in one day. "I am so scared," he says, adding "I have been having sleepless night thinking about what I will feed my family."
