Crazy cutoffs had students buying caste certificates

New Delhi: After Delhi University's sky high cut offs hit the headlines, yet another controversy has emerged from the campus. Delhi police's crime branch has busted a gang selling fake caste certificates to students seeking admission to the Capital's top colleges.

The certificates were sold to students for five lakh rupees each.

Delhi university has already been in news for unprecedented cut offs this year. The OBC quota cut offs were marginally lower. Clearly, some students took advantage of this to get admission in their dream college, even after securing 94% in the class XII examinations.

The kingpin, Himanshu Gupta, a 26-year-old former merchant navy officer had been running a successful scam for over three years. Gupta and his associates would print the fake certificates, and even upload names on to a website, to make it look more authentic.

"We caught someone in front of Hansraj college. He had documents of a girl student. She wanted to get admission through forged documents," said Ashok Chand, DCP Crime Branch.

Police say at least 13 students have used these fake certificates to get admission in colleges like the Sri Ram College of Commerce (SRCC), Venkateshwara, Kirorimal and Delhi College of Vocational studies, among others.

The admissions have been cancelled and the police are contemplating legal action against the parents, while they look for other members of the gang.
