Clarity Yet to Emerge on Intentions of 3 Arrested Indian Mujahideen Suspects, Says Bengaluru Commissioner

The intentions of the three Indian Mujahideen suspects arrested yesterday are likely to emerge as the investigation progresses, Bengaluru Police Commissioner MN Reddi has said.

Bengaluru: Bengaluru Police, who arrested three men believed to be members of the banned Indian Mujahideen group, say the investigation is still at a very initial stage. Explosives and other incriminating evidence against the three men were seized in raids on houses in Bengaluru and Bhatkal, which is in the Uttara Kannada district of Karnataka, as a result of joint operation between the Bengaluru Police and intelligence agencies.

"We are not in a position to give you any concrete update because the investigation is in very, very initial stages," Bengaluru Police Commissioner MN Reddi told media persons today.

"It is only yesterday that we have taken these people into custody. We need to get them into police custody through a court order, so there are various processes going on and investigation is moving on the right lines. We need to inquire into a number of aspects into this particular case of gathering the explosives, etc, so that work is on. I am not in a position to comment any further," he added.

Mr Reddi did not want to express an opinion on how long he felt the three men had been active, as the investigation might reveal something different. "A large amount of bomb-making equipment, including explosives, have been seized. Now, how quickly they were interested in dispersing it or putting it to use is something that will come out only after the investigation is done," he said.

He also ruled out passing comment on any potential connection with the upcoming visit to India of US President Barack Obama, for the Republic Day celebrations.
