Chandrababu's convoy stoned by Telangana activists

Hyderabad: Chandrababu Naidu's drive to Mahbubnagar turned into a bumpy one, as locals threw stones at his convoy.

Naidu, who heads the Telugu Desam Party (TDP), wanted to tour this part of Andhra Pradesh to express his solidarity with farmers who are upset over a shortage of fertilizers.

However, pro-Telangana activists have repeatedly warned that any politician who opposed the campaign for the creation of a separate Telangana state will not be allowed into the region.

In December, the union government announced that a bifurcation of Andhra Pradesh was probable. However, after massive protests followed, politicians in Andhra, who had been arguing in favour of a new Telangana state, quickly backtracked. The union government has since appointed a committee to study the issue.

The emotive Telangana issue also hit actor-politician Chiranjeevi over the weekend.  His brother, Pavan Kalyan, stars in the new Telugu film, Komaram Puli, which released on Friday. Telangana activists succeeded in forcing the producers to drop "Komaram"  from the title. Komaram was a revolutionary from Telangana who fought against the Nizam of Hyderabad. Given the fact that Chiranjeevi has opposed a Telangana state, the protestors said, the actor and his family should not evoke this Telangana icon.
