New Delhi: A Delhi girl, M Gayatri has topped this year's Central Board of Secondary Education or CBSE Class XII examinations, scoring 496 out 500 or 99.2 per cent in the Commerce stream. The CBSE announced the results on Monday afternoon.

Overall, girls have done better than boys in 2015, the board has announced. In the top three are two girls - topper M Gayatri is from the New Greenfield School in Delhi's Saket and Mythili Mishra of Amity School, Noida, has tied for second place with B Arjun of Kendriya Vidyalaya Pattom, in Thiruvananthapuram, the region that has the most successful result with almost 96 per cent students pass in the examination.

Both Mythili and Arjun have scored 495 out of 500.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has congratulated students for passing the exam and wished them the best for their future.

A delay in the announcement meant jammed phone lines and slow-to-load result websites as anxious students attempted to log on. The CBSE had earlier said it would post results on the websites www.results.nic.in, www.cbseresults.nic.in and www.cbse.nic.in by 12 noon, but the results were up there only by about 12:40 pm.

#cbseresults is top trending on twitter as months of tension finally gives way to celebration for many - 82 per cent of the 1,040,368 who appeared for the Class XII exam have passed.

The hashtag had climbed up steadily through the morning, as students posted short nervous messages while waiting,

MTNL subscribers can call 28127030 (Delhi) and 011-28127030 (other parts of the country).

Officials said the results of the Class X would also be announced on May 27.

The CBSE, in a statement, said post-result counselling would begin on Monday and would continue till June 8. Students can use a toll-free number -- 1800118004 -- for this.
