CBI probe into Ishrat Jehan case?

Ahmedabad, Mumbai: The Supreme Court will on Monday give its judgement on the petition by Ishrat Jehan's mother seeking a CBI probe into the encounter which killed her daughter and her request that the Magistrate Tamang report be revived.

During the hearing, the Supreme Court had hinted that the issue be referred to a division bench of Gujarat High Court. A single judge of Gujarat High Court had stayed Tamang report which had termed Ishrat killing as fake encounter.

Gujarat police team had shot dead the 19-year-old girl from Thane and her associates Javed Ghulam Sheikh alias Pranesh Kumar Pillai, Amjad Ali alias Rajkumar Akbar Ali Rana and Jisan Johar Abdul Gani on June 15, 2004, on the outskirts of Ahmedabad.

The state police later claimed that the four planned to assassinate Chief Minister Narendra Modi.

Magistrate Tamang in his report had questioned the Gujarat police claim that Ishrat and others were planning to kill the Chief Minister. The report also said the police merely staged a shootout and killed them in cold blood.

This report was stayed by the Gujarat High Court which constituted a Special Investigating team (SIT) to probe the encounter.

Ishrat's mother Shamima Kausar has challenged the High Court order wanting the revival of Tamang report and has sought a CBI probe into the encounter.
