Chennai: Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa has urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to direct officials at Indian embassies in Bahrain and Qatar to arrange transportation of a fisherman's body to the state.

Fisherman Antony Arun Anish was shot dead by sea pirates on August 6.

In a letter to Mr Modi yesterday, Ms Jayalalithaa said Mr Anish was a contract labourer in a Qatar-based fishing company. He was shot by sea pirates while fishing along with five other fishermen.

"After being shot at by sea pirates, the Bahrain Coast Guard airlifted the injured fisherman to a Bahrain hospital where he succumbed to his injuries. The body of the deceased fisherman is now reportedly kept at a hospital in Bahrain," she said.

The Tamil Nadu Chief Minister also requested the Prime Minister to direct the embassy officials to take up this matter with Anish's employer and to ensure that the terminal monetary benefits due to Mr Anish were released to his family without any delay.

She also announced a compensation of Rs 500,000 to the family of the deceased from the Chief Minister's Relief Fund.
