BJP's Alliance Was Opportunistic, Not Ours: Misa Bharti

Mumbai: Rashtriya Janata Dal or RJD supremo Lalu Prasad Yadav underwent several tests at the Asian Heart Institute in Mumbai, on a day when results of the by-polls for ten assembly seats were declared in his home state of Bihar.

Mr Yadav had to be brought to Mumbai for -- what his family maintains -- was a pre-scheduled routine checkup.

But Mr Yadav is happy with the results: His RJD won three of the ten seats, while its new-found alliance partner Janata Dal - United won two seats and the Congress won one.

"People have realised that the BJP and PM (Narendra) Modi have made false promises and have not been able to tackle issues like inflation. They now realise that it's easy to say things when you are in the Opposition, but difficult to fulfill them when you come to power," Mr Yadav's daughter Misa Bharti told reporters.

Hitting back at detractors, Ms Bharti, who lost in the recent Lok Sabha elections from Bihar's Pataliputra constituency, said, "Our alliance was called opportunistic by the BJP and the media. The BJP's alliance with the LJP (Lok Janshakti Party) and (Rashtriya Lok Samta Party leader) Upendra Kushwaha was opportunistic."

She added, "I thank the people of Bihar for showing faith in our alliance. It is a very new alliance and we did not have much time to prepare for the elections. The Bhagalpur seat has been with the BJP since 1995 and our alliance has been able to wrest that seat as well."

Throughout the day, several senior politicians including Nationalist Congress Party leaders Sharad Pawar and Praful Patel and Communist Party of India - Marxist Sitaram Yechury visited the RJD chief.

Speaking to reporters, Mr Yechury said, "The BJP has lost three seats. After hearing the 'acchey din' slogan, only one song comes to my mind now. The song is "Koi lauta dey mujhe beetey huye din (someone please give me back the days gone by)."

Mr Patel later told reporters, "Laluji was watching the analysis of results on TV and was of the opinion that the change has already begun."
