BJP Rakes Up Scams, Atrocities On Dalits Under Mayawati's Rule

BJP national secretary Shrikant Sharma said Mayawati as chief minister oversaw a corrupt goverment.

New Delhi: Dalit atrocities, scams worth lakhs of rupees, and support to criminals for short term political gains were the hallmarks of Bahujan Samajwadi Party chief Mayawati's tenure as chief minister, Uttar Pradesh BJP alleged today.

In a statement questioning Ms Mayawati's promise of providing good governance, the BJP said that she had no moral right to claim so after faced corruption charges in a number of scams.

"She (Mayawati) has run her past goverments in the company of criminals and is still keeping them with her. She has no moral right ot claim that she will send them behind bars if she becomes chief minister again," said BJP's national secretary Shrikant Sharma.

The statement also contrasted Ms Mayawati's tenure as chief minister with that of the NDA at the centre claiming that the government under Prime Minister Modi had worked hard to curb crime and also launched a number of schemes to help the poor.

"The National Rural Health Mission scam was during her tenure, it was worth Rs 85000 crore. It just shows the story of corruption under her. There were scams in police recruitment, sugar factory, Taj corridor, the list is endless. The BSP is an alliance of the corrupt," Mr Sharma said.

Citing records of atrocities against Dalits under the BSP government, Mr Sharma claimed that over 30,000 cases were registered between 2008 and 2011 in Uttar Pradesh.

The BJP and the BSP will face off in polls in Uttar Pradesh next year, and both parties are already sharpening their political pitch.

Mr Sharma even alleged that the BSP and the ruling Samajwadi Party in the state were hand in glove, which is why no action was taken against minister Azam Khan who had described rape instances as "political conspiracy."

The BJP, Mr Sharma promise, will give the people of Uttar Pradesh a corruption free administration that won't tolerate crime, if voted to power next year.
