Pandemonium continued to prevail in Parliament for the second consecutive day today as the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) stalled proceedings over the lathicharge on its youth workers on Tuesday. BJP leaders called for the resignation of Union Home Minister P Chidambaram over the police action on members of the Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha (BJYM) who were demanding the resignation of Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit over the Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) report on irregularities in the Commonwealth Games.
"Delhi Police acted on Chidambaram's instruction. He must resign and there can be no compromise", BJP leader Shanawaz Hussain said.
The main opposition party also threatened that it wouldn't allow the Parliament to function.
The ruckus led to both Houses of Parliament being adjourned for the day.
The Lok Sabha witnessed two adjournments in the pre-lunch sitting with the Chair finally calling it a day when it reassembled at 2 pm.
The Rajya Sabha, which was adjourned till noon as soon as it convened, was then adjourned for the day.
The lathicharge on the BJP's youth activists had also dominated the Parliament's proceedings yesterday with party members raising the issue in the Rajya Sabha and demanding a statement from Mr Chidambaram on the issue.
Leader of opposition in the Lok Sabha, Sushma Swaraj had called the government "corrupt and brutal."
Activists of the BJYM had turned violent yesterday as they reached Parliament Street. Police tried to persuade them for at least 45 minutes but the crowd did not back down. In fact, some of the protesters resorted to stone-pelting resulting in 23 police personnel being injured, two seriously.
The police had to resort to
lathicharge and water cannons to disperse the crowd. They also fired 15 rounds of tear gas shells.
Ms Swaraj claimed most of the activists admitted in the Ram Manohar Lohia hospital had suffered fractures.
