Kota, Rajasthan: When he graduates in a few months, a 21-year-old from IIT Kharagpur will start work at Microsoft in Silicon Valley with an annual salary of one crore.

Vatsalya Singh Chauhan is from a small village in Bihar, where his father works as a welder.

After Vatsalya did poorly in the IIT entrance exam in 2009, he enrolled at Kota in Rajasthan, renowned for its coaching classes for IIT hopefuls.

Three teachers there ensured his expenses were looked after, according to Vatsalya's father, Chandra Kant Singh Chauhan. "Those three teachers spotted his talent and covered all the costs," he said to NDTV. "I just had to pay for his train tickets when he came to see us." Mr Chauhan also said that when he visited his son in Kota, the teachers "provided us with the sort of food I could never afford at home."

Mr Chauhan, who has five other children, said he has now sent one of his daughters to Kota to prepare for the medical entrance exam.
